Can you organize a wedding in a couple of days?

Turns out you can.

There were a few details to arrange, e.g. Justice of the Peace, location, etc, but it is really quite easy to get married in Connecticut.

We chose to go out of Rhode Island because our surrounding states have legalized marriage for everyone, and we wanted to support this.
Rachel found an awesome little place called Mystic, CT (yep, it has the famous Mystic Pizza from the movie) and thought that since we were engaged on Avalon getting married in Mystic seemed appropriate.

We found an inn, a former residence built in 1771, for our wedding location and mini-honeymoon, a Justice of the Peace to perform the ceremony, and a fun place for a fancy dinner.  Everything was set!

Here is the inn where we got married and had a mini-moon: Whitehall Mansion

Step One

Obtain a marriage licence.

This was a little interesting because Mystic is a township and not a real city. The west side is technically Grotton, and the east side is  Stonington.  Where you get your licence depends on which side of the city the ceremony is performed.

This is one of my favorite pictures

We were looking cute and ready to get married!

We headed straight for Stonington Town Hall on the morning of our wedding.

The Town of Stonington was out of the way and had really neat houses. I enjoyed the huge Town Hall. I wonder if it has always been a town hall, or if it was originally a grand house.

Obligatory pose with the licence

The ladies in the office were very nice and smiled a lot.  I think people find it cute when you get married, whether they know you or not.

Yay! We are getting Married!!

Obligatory Pose with the Licence

The little downtown area in Stonington had a old time feel to it, and I'm sure most of the buildings were from the 17- 18 hundreds.

We ate at Noah's Restaurant (a charming place that I found on the internet).

The food was tasty. Steve observed that this is probably a retirement town.  A lot of the restaurant patrons were over 60.  We were outnumbered by the grownups.  Most of the waitresses looked as if they were young 20's, so some residents are under 60.  I think this is just the kind of small town, on the water with huge houses, where I would like to retire.

We noticed we were just a few blocks from the water, so we took a stroll and found a nice shady place to sit.

The view was gorgeous, and there was a nice breeze coming off the water.  We sat for a long time, looking at all the boats and taking bets on what the couple would do with their dingy once they were on their proper boat.

In the distance you can see Fishers Island.  If it were a clearer day, you can supposedly see Long Island from here.

The Wind would not accept any hair that was not free and blowing in the breeze!

The houses have their own docks.  The one in the center has a ramp that extends into the water so their dogs have an easier time going in and out.

There were many types of boats to watch

Steve enjoying the shade.

We spied some interesting looking buildings and decided to check them out. On our way we found Cannon Square. We have no idea why they named it that.

Turns out that the cool buildings belonged to the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club.  After walking on the grass to read this sign, I was annoyed to see the "we spray tons of pesticides on this grass so keep your pets and rug-rats off it."

The buildings were still neat, and the chemicals keep the grass very green.

There was another outlet to the water, so we took a closer look. It seems no matter where you go in this town you are not far from the ocean. The view here was beautiful but sunny and hot.

Really neat houses in the background.

It was time to go check into our Hotel.  On the way we found geese! Steve knows my love for them, so we stopped to say hi.  A yard near by had ducks, geese, and all manor of creatures.  Yep, I officially love Stonington.

Onward to Mystic!

Step Two

Get pretty for ceremony!!

Steve and I clean up quite nicely, and it was really fun to get all pretty. Because it was a wedding, everything was not as I rehearsed. My hair didn't cooperate, my shoes wouldn't go on right, etc. Even with all that it was perfect!

Since we eloped, we were our own paparazzi. So some of these were me trying to re-create those weird bride/groom pictures that photographers always seem to do.

The bride looks down thoughtfully.

I really like this one, in spite the fact that my hair is all over the place.

The bride looks down thoughtfully without her glasses.

The groom puts on shoes. Yep, good stuff here.

I particularly love this one because Steve was giving me serious face, and I made him laugh. I love it when I get those moments on film

I find that I like pictures best that I have taken, so I am particularly fond of this one too.

We were all pretty, and there was only one thing left to do!

Step Three

Get Married

There are not really grounds at Whitehall Mansion, but we managed to find a bit of green. From the pictures you can imagine that we are in a dense forest area, but that is an illusion.

The ceremony was short and sweet. The justice of the peace was nice and took pictures for us. There was much gazing into eyes and saying of vows.

This looks like 2 parts love, 1 part staring contest.

We did the exchange of the rings. I love that mine is as slight as Steve's is thick. As I didn't want to detract from my wonderful engagement ring (Steve's grandma's wedding band), so we went with simple and elegant.

I was really happy with Steves choice.  I think it looks very natural on his hand, but I may be biased. I am the one who put it there.

This is, of course, my favorite part.
The "yay we did it", kissing part!

The Justice of the Peace was taking pictures that turned out quite sweet.

Mr. & Mrs. McNally!

This one is another favorite. We are cute with a dash of silly.

I told you this was my favorite part!

There were dragonflies everywhere during the ceremony, and this one stayed very still for a picture.

We went back into the hotel and took some fun pictures. I think the back and white goes well with the setting and the dress.

Married and we have the jewelry to prove it!

Step Four

Celebrate!

We made reservations for the Captain Daniel Packer Inne, which it turns out is one, of many, snazzy joints in Mystic. It didn't look like much from the outside, but the Internet said it was the place to be for good food.

It is a very cool historic house. We were led up tiny stairs, built for much smaller feet than mine, to the third story. We did not have one of the coveted window seats, but the atmosphere was charming. I could imagine myself to be a weary traveler, in need of an inn, in the 1700's.

The menu was made up of many fancy meats and, of course, seafood.  I had never had duck before, so Steve let me steal a bite of his. He said it was very good duck, but I have nothing to compare it to. The Salmon was yummy.

I think the food that stole the show for me was the roasted garlic. It was spreadable and yummy on their bread. Yep, I am fairly easy to please.

Yummy roasted garlic and butter.

Delightful salmon

Delicious Duck

We decided that our stomachs could not possibly hold dessert, so we took some for later.

It was a lovely celebration of our little wedding and set the bar very high for all future married dinners!
